Women Helping Women
A Career Mentor Program
This program was originally founded eight years ago by the Cayuga County Women’s Republican Club in 2000. However, in the spirit of collaboration we decided to expand our group of mentors for the benefit of the young women we want to help.
Do you remember someone who made a big difference in your life? A teacher who commented about your remarkable talent in a specific subject? Maybe it was a relative who taught you a special skill? Or a friend who listened to your ideas and encouraged you to take a risk because they believed in you? The Career Mentor Program asks local accomplished women to volunteer one hour a year to make a substantial difference in a young woman’s life.
The mentors visit the Harriet Tubman Residential Center to share their story of how they got to where they are today. We want these girls to know that life’s path is not always straight, and it is often surprising and unpredictable. We also want to impress how important reading and education is along with encouraging them to have mentors in their lives, and eventually becoming mentors themselves in the future. Their knowledge about work and life experiences tremendously helps these girls.
Thank you to Co-chairs Sue Dwyer and Barb Bowen for organizing this program every year. A HUGE THANK YOU to all of the mentors who participate in this program:
